GABRIELA

Filipino women have a long history of struggle against oppression, foreign control and male domination. They have fought for equal opportunities in the work place, for political rights and for the right to education. One of them had led a regional revolt against Spanish colonizers. She was Gabriela Silang.

Starting with a coalition of 42 women's groups in 1984, GABRIELA today is a centre of over a hundred women's organisations, institutes, desks and programmes. From being a coalition of middle-class women, GABRIELA now finds its base among grassroots women, the peasants, workers and urban poor, women from religious institutions, students across the country, the most oppressed and marginalized. Together, 40,000 women fall under GABRIELA's mantle.
