With a chuckle the black piglet disappeared through a crack in the wall which the masons were just filling.
Reader nearly bust his nose on the dusty yellow sandstone.
"You can't leave me like this."
The masons wiped their trowls and laughed.
"A piglet, you say? And what about the griffin and the unicorn, didn't they pass by as well?" "No, indeed!" He said "indeed" because he was on his dignity.
"We've got a tower to build, clear off," said the masons.
Reader was puzzled. He thought maybe if he tried going back to the desert, to the place where the tower was just visible on the horizon as a tiny yellow wart, perhaps re-approaching from there it might turn out different.
He wandered through the bustling souk, casting a glance at the stalls with astrolabes and wonderfully wrought compasses and telescopes. But a voice inside him said "Take nothing with you."
Now his dignity had helpfully disappeared due to the heat.
